The transformation of the global energy system in line with the Paris Agreement requires rapid uptake of renewables throughout all kinds of energy use. Molten-Salt based Thermal Energy Storage technology, which is the only thermal energy storage technology deployed at scale for storing renewable energy, can help to integrate high shares of renewable energy in power generation, industry and buildings. Technical performance of Molten-Salt Thermal Energy Storage systems is proven for over 10 years’ operating track record at utility-scale in multi-GW CSP plants. The next generation of Molten-Salt Thermal Energy Storage system being developed by Cratus will increase operating temperature ranges and performance, which would materially improve conversion efficiencies of CSP plants, and cost reductions will accelerate adoption of these systems across multiple industries.

Cratus is developing its ThermaBlox™ molten salt electro-thermal energy storage and conversion systems. These conversion systems will operate at the highest temperatures and power densities (smallest size, highest efficiency) which can becoupled to a steam (1st gen) or sCO2 power block and a smart transformer. ThermaBlox™ has 15X smaller footprint and 3X lower cost than lithium-ion battery packs, is safely transportable and is non-toxic.
